Wembley Arena pitched as basketball venue for 2012 Olympics

Moving preliminary basketball games at the 2012 Olympics to Wembley Arena, instead of building a temporary venue, could save £150 million for the game’s organizers.
Moving preliminary basketball games at the 2012 Olympics to Wembley Arena, instead of building a temporary venue, could save £90 million for the game’s organizers.

O2 Arena is already slated to host the semifinals and finals.

The bigger issue, according to London’s Olympic organizers: the runaway costs of building new venues for the 2012 Games. We’re talking serious money: it will cost £1 billion alone for the athletes village and £400 million for the media center, money’s that not yet raised. And with the credit crunch now officially an international phenomemon, financing the Games has been a serious issue: the British government is expected to kick in at least £250 million. Under these circumstances, using Wembley Arena instead of building a temporary venue seems to be a no-brainer.
