Village Board approved the sale of an 8.43-acre parcel to a Chicago-area investment firm, who pledge to build a $10-million arena and bring in a United States Hockey League team to the Wausau area.
The $1 sale of the Cedar Creek-area parcel, which has been appraised in the past as being worth $1 million, is technically to a nonprofit, Wausau Event Center Inc. In addition, the board has pledged up to $250,000 in improvements to the land, using tax-increment financing.
The funding for the new area comes from a Chicago-area firm, which reportedly has raised $9 million of the $10 million needed for construction. The main tenant would be a junion USHL team, who will play 34 home games per season in the facility. The group pledged to work with local nonprofits to schedule concerts and other events as well.
