Concrete poured at new Rapid City arena; November opening still on track

Yeah, it seems a little late to us, too: concrete was poured yesterday at the Rushmore Plaza Civic Center in Rapid City, as work on the $25-million arena addition continues in anticipation of a November opening and debut of the CHL’s Rapid City Rush.
The concrete floor was poured yesterday at the Rushmore Plaza Civic Center in Rapid City, as work on the $25-million arena addition continues in anticipation of a November opening and debut of the CHL’s Rapid City Rush.

Arena officials say construction is right on schedule for the expansion Rush to begin their home season in late November. The latest work had crews pouring 270 cubic yards of concrete over the course of six hours, a timeframe nedded to prevent future cracks in the surface. It will take 27 days for the concrete to cure.

To be sure, an arena floor is a whole lot more than just poured concrete. Witness what needed to be installed before the concete was poured: begin with a base, top it with heating pipes, eight inches of sand, four inches of insulation and piping for the ice freezing, all topped with a steel meshing.
