Flyers would consider stocking Trenton ECHL team

Trenton TitansThough the Philadelphia Flyers would have no interest in owning a new Trenton ECHL team, they would be interested in sending players if the league arranges a franchise, according to team president Peter Luukko.

The old Trenton Titans were affiliated with and partly owned by the Flyers and were generally successful before the team was sold to the New Jersey Devils. And while the Flyers had some success in owning a minor-league team — the Philadelphia Phantoms (AHL) drew well at The Spectrum — they’re not interested in replicating that experience.

In an interview with PhillyBurbs.com, Luukko held open the possibility of affiliating with a new team:

“If there were new ownership in Trenton and I know the league is working very hard to put that together so the team can play next season, we would definitely discuss an affiliation,” Luukko said. “And because we manage the building, we’d do anything we could to help promote the team and do a lot of cross-promotion between the Flyers and that company and the Trenton team. We would be very supportive of a team in Trenton.”

The Flyers currently send players to the Wheeling Nailers in the ECHL.
