The Eastern Professional Hockey League is at the bottom of the ladder in professional hockey, drawing players who need to work their way up to the ECHL. So you can expect there’s a lot of physical play as opposed as skilled puck-handling — which played pretty well to the 2,200 fans at the Aviator Sports and Recreation Complex, where fights were cheered.
The arena is an interesting venue for pro hockey: It’s in a complex formerly housing Floyd Bennett Field, the first municipal airport in New York City. Celebrity pilots like Wiley Post, Amelia Earhart and Howard Hughes used the airport, and during World War II it was a busy base for the military. The Aces moniker stems from the background.
