Johnson: We’ll take another run at new Kings arena

Sacramento KingsWith a proposed new arena at the Cal Expo site now totally dead, Sacramento Mayor Kevin Johnson wants to see a new set of proposals for a new Sacramento Kings (NBA) facility.

It’s not as though there are any plans floating around out there: tying a larger sports facility to a development is too speculative for most developers (and lenders) these days, so Johnson will most likely be relying on proposals already rejected by the city’s arena task force — something he explicitly acknowledged.

So far two developers have said they’ll resubmit their original arena proposals: one for a downtown arena and one for a Natomas arena, according to the Sacramento Bee. Neither engendered a whole lot of enthusiasm when first proposed, to be honest. But someone had better generate enthusiasm soon: we may be down to the final days of the Sacramento Kings, as team owners and the NBA warn that the lack of a new arena will most likely lead to a move of the franchise.
