Hersheypark Arena to be renovated

Hersheypark ArenaHistoric Hersheypark Arena, the former home of the Hershey Bears (AHL) originally built by chocolate magnate Milton Hershey, will undergo renovations this fall.

The $2.1-million project will address basic infrastructure issues, such as a roof replacement.

Opening in 1936, the former Hershey Sports Arena hosted Hershey Bears (AHL) games through 2002, when the team moved to Giant Arena. In the old days, Wednesday and Saturday were hockey nights, with other events like the Ice Capades and NBA games fillng in the other dates. This was where Wilt Chamberlain set a single-game scoring record, putting in 100 points for the Philadelphia Warriors against the New York Knicks in 1962.

Here’s your trivia for the day:  when the AHL’s Hershey Bears debuted on Nov. 5, 1938, the team name was the Hershey B’ars.
