Pittsburgh chooses to tear down Igloo, drawing lawsuit

Civic Arena, Pittsburgh{jathumbnail off}

After the Pittsburgh City Council voted to tear down historic Civic Arena, Preservation Pittsburgh filed suit in federal court, arguing that preservation guidelines were not followed during consideration of that action.

Despite efforts by Preservation Pittsburgh to identify alternative uses for the arena now that the Pittsburgh Penguins (NHL) moved to Consol Energy Center, no one has stepped forward with a financially feasible preservation outline. Preservation Pittsburgh wants to mothball the facility to give potential developers more time to propose some sort of plan.

The argument is that federal highway funds that would create streets on the arena site, and that conditions placed on the federal funds require more adherence to preservation guidelines.
