LA D-Fenders suspend operations

L.A. D-FendersThe Los Angeles Lakers have suspended the operations of the D-Fenders for a year and will seek a new home for the D-League franchise for the 2011-2012 season.

The Lakers have owned the D-Fenders since July 2006 but have not run it as a typical D-League team: the franchise played four hours before Lakers game and did not charge a separate admission. And while the costs of a D-League team are limited to staff and players when you own the venue, they apparently were too much for the Lakers to absorb indefinitely.

Lakers ownership says the team will be back in another venue, probably in the Los Angeles market.
