A federal judge is ordering the NFL's Washington Redskins to close-caption everything broadcast over the P.A. system during games at FedEx Field under the American with Disabilities Act -- and it's probably just a matter of time before all sports teams and arena operators must follow suit.
The suit, filed by hard-of-hearing and deaf Redskins fans, asked US District Judge Alexander Williams to rule that everything broadcast at a game -- advertisements, public-address announcements, game descriptions, even music lyrics -- be close-captioned on the scoreboard.
The ruling is expected to pave the way for other ADA advocates to approach arena operators to provide similar levels of closed-captioning.
